Chapter Nineteen

THE VID screen special message played on the wall in the interrogation room too, and they all watched in horror. What was he saying? Shane had to wonder. Was the president planning on wiping out anyone who wasn’t perfectly human? Would there even be enough of humanity left to survive?

“Alert! Alert!” The computer’s siren began to wail. “AP agitation state max.”

“Shit!” Shane growled. “Location?” he shouted at the computer.

“Med lab,” Paris answered instead. “We left them all there. Candy, Ivy, Jack, and Aki.”

“Fuck.” Shane bolted toward the stairs.

Marc moved behind him, sucking in a deep breath. He closed his eyes, and a moment later the bonds broke and giant bat-like wings tore from his back, arching across the room.

Shane braced for the worst the moment Marc’s wings came out. Only he didn’t attack. He flew over the top of Shane, brushing past him up the stairs and toward the med center. Paris had unleashed his claws and fangs, and followed. Shane cursed and ran after them. “Don’t you dare hurt Aki!” he screamed at them.

The other men were breaking free of their bonds and rushing around them as well. Shane wanted to tear into them all. What if they hurt Aki?

The alarm hurt his ears and his heart pounded. Fuck, fuck, fuck! He raced up the stairs, taking them two at a time and weaving from office to office, around equipment. The fire of the change rolled through him. His muscles shifted, expanding, tightening, and fur burst through his skin. By the time they reached the room his scream had turned into a howl. But even the last plague didn’t prepare him for what he found when they entered the medical ward.

Aki hovered in a halo of white-and-blue-glowing power. Wings spread wide, no blood staining them, which was odd, and his claws sliced out in a menacing flash of obsidian black. His eyes shone so bright that Shane couldn’t make out his face.

Paris slammed into Aki, gripping around his waist to try to pull him away from Ivy and Candy and a half-shifted Jack who was bleeding from several long gashes along his arms. Aki barely budged, despite Paris hitting him with the force of a truck. Shane growled and reached for Aki, his beast fighting for control. He had to protect Mate. They were attacking Mate!
